*tap*tap*tap* is this thing on?

comment moderation is now on :(

october 8, 2008 at 11:43pm in general

as much as i hate to do this, i'm getting tired of the loser(s) posting WoW spam links in the comments. i don't particularly mind cleaning 'em up... but for the 3 or 4 people that actually cared enough to subscribe to the blog... i really don't like the thought of them getting the spam in return.

at some point, i may look into incorporating jake munson's cfformProtect or some other measure to try and eliminate the spam. but for now, between work and a couple of side jobs that i'm desperately trying to finish up, i simply don't have the time.

if anyone's interested, the spammer in question posted from the following IP addresses. feel free to add 'em to your blacklist:

122.234.50.22
122.234.49.8
85.26.161.48
122.234.52.25
125.120.151.48

Yeah, that WoW Gold and WAR Gold spammer is really annoying... I increased the complexity of the captcha on my blog to deal with it, which isn't a solution that I like :( But within a month I think I've probably had more than 100 spam comments, and after the change (10 days or so ago) I've had about 2 or 3.

Just add a few choice 'WOW gold' related domain names and keywords to your trackback spam list and you'll never see this spam again. Thats what I did and it has worked for months.

@justin: no offense, but I hate the idea of punishing 99% of your users on account of one moron. difficult captcha = no fun.

@todd: No offense taken, because I totally agree... The first thing I did was add the relevant keywords to the trackback spam list but it didn't help, the spam continued for almost a full week. I think increasing the captcha by 2 characters is a small price to pay, for now. Personally, I'm just not online enough at the moment for comment moderation to be a good solution, otherwise people might wait a couple of days before I approve comments to appear, which is probably worse since then no real type of discussion can take place at all :\ But it's a hard thing to balance - some blogs are clearly more affected than others for some reason.
